Judy is accepting new clients!
I have a master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from UBC, and I am a member of Canadian Psychological Association and Association for Contextual Behavioural Science. Throughout my course of education, I have studied various counselling approaches such as emotion focused approach, cognitive approach, behavioural approach and systemic approach. I also have received further training in Interpersonal Therapy, and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). Another professional hat I wear is as doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine registered in BC. I completed my degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2000. I have been a registered doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncturist with CTCMA (College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of British Columbia) and have been in private practice since 2001. I am a member of British Columbia Association of TCM & Acupuncture Practitioners.
I have been in the helping profession for the past 16 years. I worked as a student counsellor at UBC’s New Westminster Counselling Centre and have helped diverse clients dealing with issues such as depression, anxiety, life transition, grief and loss, past abuse and career issues. I worked as an intern counsellor at Pacifica Treatment Center, helping people with various addiction issues. I also interned at Stewart & Associates Counselling & Coaching Services, counselling people from diverse backgrounds with diverse challenges. In my private practice of Chinese Medicine and acupuncture for 16 years, I focus on using a body/mind integrated approach to help people with depression, anxiety, insomnia, stress related health issues and other chronic health conditions to have better physical and emotional well-being. I have led workshops and seminars on the topic of stress management and healing depression and anxieties with Chinese Medicine. I also had experience working with First Nation people in Northern Quebec. I have taught courses on Chinese medicine in Central College in Burnaby, and supervised student clinic in International College of TCM in Vancouver.
I believe that people have strengths and inner wisdom to direct their lives toward their valued directions. However, sometimes in life, you may feel that you are so lost and stuck as if stumbling in an endless dark tunnel with the light at the end of tunnel beyond reach. My job as a counsellor is to hold a torch and walk with you so that your journey may be easier, you may reach that light sooner, and you may re-discover your own strengths and reconnect with your inner guiding compass. I believe that self awareness and self acceptance are key to change, and I strive to provide a conducive environment for you to explore your experience, to increase self-awareness and self-acceptance so that you can heal, change and realize a more fulfilling life. I believe the importance of engaging the whole being in therapy, and of contacting the present moment to cultivate self-awareness. Two main principles in my work are mindfulness and holistic approaches of integrating body and mind. Depending on each individual’s presenting issues and their specific goals, I will choose the therapy approach that suits them the best, such as Emotion Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy, Person Centered Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy etc. Throughout the counselling process, I also use different techniques that are drawn from Gestalt Therapy, Solution Based Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Existential Therapy and Family System Therapy etc.
I help people with depression, anxiety, addiction issues, relationship problems, parenting issues, shame and self-esteem issues, career transition, grief and loss, existential issues, and spiritual issues. I also help couples to improve communication, deepen intimacy and have better relationships. I do not fix you or solve your problems for you, but I work with you to re-discover your own strengths and inner wisdom, to fully accept yourself as a perfectly imperfect human being, to connect with what really matters to you, and provide you with tools and support you to move you toward your valued life direction.
